The guide

Microneedling: what to know before you book

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses a pen with tiny sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro channels in the skin. The skin reads them as small injuries and responds by producing new collagen and elastin. Over a series of sessions, texture smooths, pores look smaller, fine lines soften and acne scars become less visible.

The channels also let serums reach deeper, which is why many Manhattan practices pair microneedling with growth factors.

Popular add ons

  • PRP (the vampire facial): platelet rich plasma from your own blood, applied during treatment to boost healing.
  • Exosomes: lab derived signaling particles that support repair and calm redness.
  • Salmon PDRN: DNA fragments that support skin repair. See our Salmon PDRN guide.
  • Radiofrequency: adding heat turns it into RF microneedling, such as Morpheus8, for tightening.

What it helps

  • Acne scars, especially rolling and boxcar scars
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • Fine lines
  • Dullness and uneven tone
  • Stretch marks
  • Mild loss of firmness

Recovery, day by day

  • Day 1: pink to red, like a mild sunburn, sometimes tight.
  • Day 2: pinkness fades and skin can feel dry.
  • Days 3 to 5: light flaking, then back to normal.
  • Skip makeup for 24 hours, actives like retinoids for about five days, and use sunscreen every day.

At home vs professional

At home rollers only reach the surface and can spread bacteria if not sterile. Professional devices use sterile single use tips, adjustable depth and medical grade aftercare. For scars and real collagen change, book a professional.

Who should wait

Skip microneedling during an active acne breakout, eczema flare or cold sore, and talk to your provider if you have taken isotretinoin recently or form keloid scars.

FAQ

Microneedling questions, answered

How much is microneedling in NYC?

Manhattan practices that publish prices usually charge $250 to $600 per session, with PRP or exosomes adding $150 to $500. Packages of three lower the cost. See the price table for current published prices.

How many microneedling sessions do I need?

Three to six sessions about four weeks apart for texture and scars, then maintenance a few times a year.

Does microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first, so most people feel light pressure and vibration.

What is the downtime?

One to three days of pinkness and dryness. Most people go back to work the next day.

Microneedling vs Morpheus8: which is better?

Microneedling is gentler and great for texture and glow. Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency heat for tightening and deeper scars, with more downtime.

Is microneedling good for acne scars?

Yes. It is one of the most effective non laser treatments for rolling and boxcar scars over a series of sessions.
