The guide

Red light therapy: what to know before you book

How it works

Red light (around 630 to 660 nanometers) and near infrared light (around 810 to 850 nanometers) are absorbed by cells and appear to support energy production in mitochondria. Studies suggest benefits for skin, including collagen, fine lines and redness, and some evidence for muscle recovery. Blue light is used separately for acne.

Where you will find it

  • As an add on to facials, HydraFacial and microneedling
  • Stand alone LED facial masks and panels
  • Full body beds at wellness studios
  • As part of recovery memberships with sauna and cold plunge

Getting results

Consistency matters more than any single session. Most protocols suggest two to three sessions a week for a month, then maintenance. Wear the eye protection provided and tell your provider about light sensitive medications.
