The guide

Chemical peels: what to know before you book

Types of peels

  • Light peels: glycolic, lactic, mandelic or salicylic acid. Brightening with little or no peeling. Great for regular upkeep and acne.
  • Medium peels: TCA and blended peels like the VI Peel and Perfect Derma Peel. Visible peeling for about a week with stronger results on pigment, melasma, texture and fine lines.
  • Deep peels: phenol based, done by physicians, with significant downtime. Rare today.

What peeling looks like

  • Days 1 to 2: skin feels tight and may look slightly tan.
  • Days 3 to 5: flaking and peeling, usually starting around the mouth.
  • Days 6 to 7: fresh, smoother skin. Do not pick, and wear sunscreen daily.

Peels and skin tone

Medium and deeper peels carry more risk of pigment changes on medium and deep skin tones. Choose a provider experienced with your skin type, and ask about prepping with a tyrosinase inhibitor first if you have melasma.
