What lip filler does

Lip filler is a soft hyaluronic acid gel placed in and around the lips. Depending on technique and amount, it can add hydration and a soft glow, define the border and Cupid's bow, correct asymmetry, lift the corners of the mouth or add noticeable volume.

Most Manhattan injectors recommend starting with half a syringe to one syringe, then building over time. The most natural results come from respecting your own lip proportions, usually with the lower lip slightly fuller than the upper.

Lip filler vs lip flip

A lip flip uses a few units of Botox above the upper lip so it rolls out slightly. It costs less, has no volume and lasts about two months. Filler adds real volume and shape and lasts 6 to 12 months. Some people combine the two.

Swelling, day by day

• Day 1: lips look bigger than the final result and may feel tight or tender. Ice gently.
• Days 2 to 3: swelling peaks, sometimes uneven. Bruising may show.
• Days 4 to 7: most swelling is gone and the shape appears.
• Week 2: the filler has settled. This is the time to judge results and book any touch up.

Before and after care

• Avoid alcohol, fish oil and aspirin for a few days before, if your provider agrees.
• If you get cold sores, ask about an antiviral before treatment.
• Skip hard workouts, saunas and lipstick for 24 hours.
• Do not massage unless your injector tells you to.
