The guide

Laser hair removal: what to know before you book

How it works

A laser sends light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light turns into heat at the root and damages the follicle so it grows back finer, slower or not at all. Hair grows in cycles and only follicles in the active phase respond, which is why you need a series of sessions spaced weeks apart.

Results are long term reduction rather than a guarantee of zero hair. Most people see a large drop after the full series and come back for an occasional touch up.

The right laser for your skin

  • Nd:YAG (1064 nm): the safest choice for medium and deep skin tones.
  • Diode (around 810 nm): a versatile workhorse for many skin and hair types.
  • Alexandrite (755 nm): fast and effective on lighter skin with darker hair.
  • Not effective: lasers do not work well on blonde, red, gray or white hair. Ask about electrolysis instead.

Ask which machine the clinic uses and whether the technician treats skin like yours every day.

Popular areas

  • Bikini line and Brazilian
  • Underarms
  • Full or half legs
  • Face: upper lip, chin, jawline and neck
  • Arms
  • Back and chest
  • Stomach line

Before and after

  • Shave the area 24 hours before. Do not wax, tweeze or thread for at least two weeks before, since the root needs to be there.
  • Avoid tanning and self tanner for two weeks before and after.
  • Expect a snapping feeling. Cooling tips and numbing cream help on sensitive areas.
  • Redness and bumps usually fade within hours. Skip hot workouts and saunas for a day.
  • Shaved hairs shed over one to three weeks. Do not pluck them.

Packages vs single sessions

Most Manhattan clinics sell packages of six sessions per area, which usually saves 20 to 40 percent compared with paying per session. Ask what happens if you need more than six, whether the package expires and if touch ups are discounted.

Choosing a clinic

Look for licensed technicians, a medical director, the right laser for your skin and before and after photos on skin like yours. Every practice on this page shows reviews and, where published, real prices by area.
