Laser resurfacing: what to know before you book

The lasers you will hear about

  • CO2 (fully ablative or fractional): the strongest for wrinkles, scars and laxity, with one to two weeks of downtime.
  • Fraxel: fractional resurfacing for texture, pigment and scars. Several days of redness and swelling.
  • Halo: a hybrid fractional laser for tone and texture with about a week of social downtime.
  • Clear and Brilliant and Moxi: gentle "baby" lasers for glow and prevention, a day or two of roughness.
  • BBL and IPL (photofacial): light based treatment for redness, sun spots and broken capillaries, little downtime.

Choosing the right one

The right laser depends on your goal, your skin tone and how much downtime you can take. Many lasers are risky on deeper skin tones, so ask your provider which device they would use for your skin and to see results on similar skin.

Aftercare

Follow the healing plan exactly, use gentle products, avoid the sun completely and wear sunscreen every day. Fall and winter are the best seasons in New York for stronger lasers.
